Chapter Eleven
Riley
âAlex, you need to call me. Iâll pick up no matter what time it is.â
âDamn it,â I hissed under my breath, tossing my cell phone on the table and running my fingers through my hair. It was the third time Alex hadnât answered my calls. And my damn message sounded like a wounded teenager begging for a return call. Christ. Still, I was antsy as hell. Why hadnât I grilled her on where she was going? Why hadnât I insisted on an address?
Because she doesnât belong to you.
I hissed again, yanking the bottle of Budweiser toward me as I tried to concentrate on whatever sports program was on one of only two televisions in the joint. Hell, like I could think about anything else but the shit that occurred during the evening. While winning the event had been unexpected, even exciting, I wasnât in the mood to celebrate.
Alex wasnât with me.
Iâd wanted to tell her about the rodeo, even bring her with me, but I knew sheâd have continued to pepper me with questions. Iâd been such a damn fool. She was tenacious enough that she might be on a hunting adventure of her own. I had no way of knowing what her weekend plans really entailed.
However, there was no freaking doubt something was terribly wrong since she wouldnât answer. Well, of course there was. Iâd been hunted down by Bruce and some asshole in a decent suit, both men assuming Iâd cave to their bribery attempt.
My gut told me it was phase two in an attempt to keep me quiet. While Iâd listened to their bullshit, trying to take as many mental notes as possible, Iâd chosen not to respond. The conversation had been unexpected, at least given the location.
âWell, son, I should have known youâd go back to your roots. When I heard you were competinâ I just had to hunt you down,â Bruce said in an elevated Texas drawl.
âIt doesnât go against my contract, Bruce,â I said as I carefully glanced toward the second guy. While he hadnât said a word yet, I could tell he was determining just how much of a threat I was going to be. Iâd been around the block enough to know that the clothes on his back cost more than I made on my last gig in two weeks. He struck me as less than honest, even though I had no particular reason to think that way.
âOf course not,â Bruce chortled as he pumped me on the back. âHonestly? Having a star on one of my operations is a boost to morale. So, I thought Iâd introduce you to a friend of mine. Jameson Fowler, this is the now famous Riley Cooper I was telling you about. Heâs going to go real far in my business. That much I can already tell. I like what Iâm seeing already, boy. I think a promotion just might be in order. Course that comes with all the perks. Iâm sure thatâs something you
